Baseball tries to be ‘Progressive’ with the uniforms for a ‘Players Weekend’

I think this is dumb.

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan, August 25-27 will be known as ‘Player’s Weekend’, which will allow for relaxed uniform policies and expression that the players will undoubtedly push the boundaries on.

Players will have the option to wear a jersey with a nickname – though they are limited to just one, according to the memo, and “inappropriate or offensive” nicknames will be banned.

The items with minimal color restrictions include spikes, batting gloves, wristbands, compression sleeves and catcher’s masks. The colors, according to the memo, must avoid interfering with the game and an umpire’s ability to make a call. White gloves, wristbands and sleeves are prohibited.

Each jersey will feature a patch with space for a player to personalize it by “writing the name of an individual or organization that was instrumental to his development,” according to the memo.

Look, I get that baseball is doing anything and everything it can to appeal to a younger generation of fans. A group of fans who; are children and millennials and would like to see a different uniform worn by their team each and every day. But this isn’t the NFL. And I depend on baseball to set the tone and not be that way. This is a game of strong tradition.

And besides: teams wear enough damn uniforms as it is! With alternates, Mothers day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Fathers Day all thrown in there; you have teams wearing their signature look 20 times a year as it is if you’re lucky.

Falls right in line with MLB throwing ads on uniforms, and Bryce Harper ‘making the game fun again’ BS. I like the game how it was in the 80’s! Old, crusty, never changing. I am a grumpy old man on these issues and sensitive about tradition.
