Things You Should Check When Buying a House

Moving to a new home is a big decision. You can’t keep moving every time you find a problem with the house you just moved into. Remembering to check the following places during your home inspections can help you avoid headaches in the future.

Ceiling
Look at the ceilings to see if they are fixed firmly flush into place and do not have a ‘parachute’ appearance. This can be easily done by shining a torch across the ceilings, as this will show up all deflections and defects in the ceiling sheets. Source: RealEstate

Fireplace
Even though chimneys are usually installed by professionals, that doesn’t mean they’re always in pristine shape. Cleaning them is as simple as a phone call to a local chimney sweep, but finding out if all the fireplaces in the home draft correctly is another. Source: ApartmentTherapy

Roof
Improperly installed and aged surfaces occur frequently. We also see poorly installed or missing flashing at transition areas. Repairs may be simple or the entire roof may need to be replaced. Follow up any adverse roofing system findings with an evaluation by a competent roofer. Source: HGTV

Foundation
If doors and windows don’t open and close properly or cracks along the outside of the home don’t follow the mortar, there could be structural settling in the house, says Lipford. “The bigger, more pronounced the crack, the bigger the problem.” Be weary of cracks on concrete floors if one side is lower than the other as well. Electrical and Plumbing
Rewiring and updating plumbing are both expensive and extensive projects, which is why many older homes still have their original knob-and-tube wiring and cast-iron pipes. Both pose safety risks, as an old electrical system can cause a fire, and corroded pipes can result in leaks and weak water flow. Source: Safewise
