It was 29 years to the day that Kirk Gibson hit the 1988 World Series homer that is widely regarded as the biggest home run in baseball history. One of the most dramatic homers in Dodgers history happened on October 15th, 2017.
The Dodgers were down 1-0 after Addison Russell homered off Rich Hill – who was unbelievable in his own right. But the Dodgers got right back in it, with Justin Turner singling home a run with a couple of outs to knot the game 1-1.
From there, it was a pressure cooker. The Dodgers bullpen continued to be spotless and not even allow a runner; aside from Kenley Jansen hitting Anthony Rizzo in the hand. The Dodgers went Morrow to Fields to Watson to Jansen to end the game after removing Rich Hill for Curtis Granderson in the inning that they tied the game.
The Cubs were pretty good, until they got to the back end of the pen. They went Edwards Jr. to Strop to Duensing to finally John Lackey; with Joe Maddon saying he elected not to use Wade Davis ‘in case he needed him for the save’.
And with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Justin Turner put the Dodgers up two games to nothing with the series shifting to Chicago.
The Dodgers still haven’t lost a playoff game. They’ve proved in the last two nights what a great team they actually are; even without their best all around player. And even when we all stopped believing, it’s quite possible that the Dodgers never did. And just maybe it is destiny. Maybe that prediction we were so sure about back in July is going to come true. It feels like it’s the Dodgers year, now more than ever before.
