Horizon Needs Your Help

Horizon is a way to discover friends and friends of friends in the cities you’re visiting. Beyond friends and friends of friends, Horizon uses communities such as college or fraternity / sorority alumni, former colleagues, and service communities like Returned Peace Corps Volunteers to connect people to find a place to stay, grab a coffee, or even simply, ask them for a restaurant recommendation. The following 3 minute video explains the product:

One example of the power of connecting friends of friends in other cities, right here from the Geek Estate community, is Bryan Copley staying with Melissa Kwan in New York. A short note from Bryan (from CityBldr) explaining the experience:

I connected to Melissa, another tech entrepreneur from NYC, via the Horizon app a couple weeks prior to a planned 5 day NYC business trip. Having not been to NYC in 20 years, I was excited to visit but didn’t know anyone in the city. Melissa changed all of that. She was a fun and vibrant host, educating me about Gramercy and the city in general, and introducing me to her roommates as well as several other people, several of whom became friends and business colleagues. Knowing that Melissa was vetted through someone I trusted gave me confidence I’d have a better trip. That’s exactly what happened.

As Brian’s experience proves, trusted connections unlock infinite travel possibilities. Horizon’s goal is to enable those experiences to occur more frequently. We’ve been working on a crowdfunding campaign in order to enable more people to be welcomed into any city in the world by trusted connections.

Since starting this blog back in 2007, this is one of the first times I’m asking you for help. My ask of you today is:

Pledge $2 per month at the following URL: http://ift.tt/2tqdBoA

This contribution breaks out to a $25 per year, less than the $50 or $100 (or more) you give to many charities each and every year. It’s important to note, Horizon is not a charity. The business model of Horizon is charging group administrators for privacy, member control, and premium features — similar to the way GitHub or Meetup.com makes money. That said, consumer marketplaces are costly endeavors, and we need help getting to self sustainability. Your pledge is a valuable investment into continuing to improve the product and get it into the hands of more people.

We believe life’s magical moments occur face to face, and Horizon’s mission is to ensure trusted connections are available to everyone, anywhere in the world. We can’t accomplish that mission without your support.

FAQ:

What is Patreon? Why did we pick Patreon over Kickstarter or Indiegogo?

Thanks to Patreon, creators around the world are able to earn ongoing revenue directly from their fans/supporters. The key difference is it’s setup on a monthly basis.
